Jackson Design & Remodeling Announces Completion of San Diego Historic Home Remodel
100-Year-Old Home Was Built By and Home to Acclaimed Architect William Templeton Johnson
SAN DIEGO, CA, January 21, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jackson Design & Remodeling announced today the completion of a 1900s historical home remodel built by acclaimed San Diego architect William Templeton Johnson.
Johnson, who is best known for his Spanish Revival buildings, carved an enduring legacy in San Diego in the early 1900s. He is revered by modern day architects as a visionary who left an indelible mark on the industry. Johnson shared the 10,000 square foot home with his wife Clara and their four children, and though the two divorced in the early 1930s, Johnson returned to the home during the last years of his life until he died at the age of 80 in 1957. The current homeowners set out to preserve the original historical features and architecture of the home while updating the kitchen, master bath and laundry room with modern day conveniences.
"Having previously undertaken major remodels of older homes, we were well acquainted with the challenges our project presented," said the homeowners who asked to remain anonymous. "Jackson Design and Remodeling was our final choice for several reasons. Primary among them was the attention to detail exhibited by both the engineering and design departments."
The JDR team was committed to maintaining the original integrity of the home and received approval for the remodel design from the Historical Board. The space, while fitted with all the modern conveniences, carries with it the old world comfort and charm of this Mediterranean style home.
One of the first design decisions the JDR team made was to expand the kitchen from 150 square feet to approximately 600 square feet. Task, storage and entertaining areas were precisely planned to work within the newly expansive space. Material selection was essential in retaining the home's character, as was the painstaking craftsmanship of the molding detail. The chandeliers, which had been unlit for decades, were discovered in another part of the home and found new life in the kitchen hanging from ornately designed ceiling soffits.
Rustic floors, deep Tuscan-style cabinetry, and two large islands flood the space with color and storage. Two generously-sized pantries allow additional space for the cook. Flush recessed doors with beaded detail and hand-carved corbles give the cabinetry a furniture-grade look. Wrapped in cherry, majestic columns are notable design elements that also act as beams supporting the third story of the home.
The spacious kitchen is filled with hidden treasures, from stunning surface materials to unique storage elements. The new oversized range features a dramatic hood frame that opens into a spice rack for effortless cooking. The back splash granite was intricately beveled to match the countertop edge details.
"Now that the remodel is complete, the quality of work, from the initial designs through the implementation of those designs, has fulfilled the trust we put in this firm. It is a joy to walk into our seamless "addition".
"This was an amazing project to work on," said Todd Jackson, President and Owner of Jackson Design and Remodeling. "To have a home built by such an icon in the architecture world, it was an exciting challenge for our team to update the home for the homeowners while remaining true to the original design. We approached this project by studying the details of the rest of the home carefully, and by conducting extensive research into the architectural period when the home was built. We also had to ensure that we were meeting all the requirements of the Mills Act for remodeling historical homes."
